One hair nutrient analysis on hair of a woman showed extremely high Bismuth. The woman has problems with walking, standing and her joints hurt. By searching on the internet I found that Bi is used in mineral moisturizers, and also in hair dye.  Even though there was no color on the hair I used for analysis, since I only take hair that has grown since the last time the hair was dyed, the level was high. This indicates that Bi is circulating in her body. The skin of the woman was brown-grey, also possibly indicating the presence of Bi in the skin.

Nordic Water 2014, XXVIII Nordic Hydrological Conference, KTH, Stockholm, 11-13 August, 2014.

On this conference I will have an oral presentation on the topic: “The need for re-mineralization of drinking water after treatment with Reverse Osmosis”. RO water is totally demineralized and comparable to distilled water or rain water, which is unsuitable for consumption, since it will drain the body of minerals, due to the fact that osmotic balance is always the aim for the body.

The presentation is in cooperation with PhD Frantisek Kozisek, National Institute of Public Health, Czech Republic, and Professor Asher Brenner, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel.


The last meeting in the project ”Enhanced chitin-based biosorbents for drinking water purification “, which started in 2012 will be held in Konya, Turkey, 22-24 July, 2014. My part is to evaluate the mineral content and mineral balance after treatment with Chiosan to eliminate heavy metals, medicines, hormones, humic acids, bacteria etc. So far, the results are promising; the minerals are preserved, as at least the hardness of the water doesn’t change through the process.

Kursen hölls på Campus Roslagen den 9-13 juni 2014. Den var mycket uppskattad av de 24 studenter som deltog, av sammanlagt över 120 sökande. Kursen kommer att gå av stapeln även nästa år; samma plats och ungefär samma tid. Troligen kommer den även att ges under hösten som en betalkurs i Vattencentrum Norrtäljes regi.

Vad händer med hårmineraler och hälsa vid övergång från grundvatten, egna brunnar, till Omvänd Osmsos-vatten på Möja, Stockholms skärgård.

Prof. Gunnar jacks och jag har erhållit startpengar för en studie på vattenmineraler, hårmineraler och hälsa bland boende på Möja i samband med övergång från eget brunnsvatten till Omvänd Osmos-vatten, men re-mineralisering.

Tjugo permanentboende på ön kommer att få leverera ett vattenprov, ett hårprov samt fylla i en hälsoenkät innan de kopplas på Omvänd Osmosvatten. Alla proverna ska analyseras på ett 40-tal mineraler och toxiska joner och metaller; pH, konduktivitet, färgtal (Pt), NO3, NO2, NH4, Cl, HCO3, SO4, TOC, PO4, total hårdhet (°dH), samt lukt, samtliga vid KTH. Vid Acts Lab, Kanada, analyseras Ag, Al, As, B, Ba, Be, Bi, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cs, Cu, F, Fe, Ga, Ge, I, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, Pb, Rb, Sb, Sc, Se, Sn, Sr, Th, Ti, U, V, W, Zn, Zr på ICP-OES och ICP-MS.

Water in the Urban Environment Bringing Research to the Market

On 16-18 April 2013, I will have an oral presentation in Brussels on the theme:

“Drinking water minerals and mineral balance –importance and health significance”.




Last year was a productive and interesting year! Highlights of 2012 were definitely the 3 conferences and meetings worldwide, that dealt with the importance of minerals in drinking water.

leipzigLAB-IMG_0124The first important meeting was in June in Leipzig, with MR Andreas Heppe, the head and owner of the industry that produces Chitosan. Chitosan eliminates toxic substances from drinking water and is produced by treating shrimp and other crustacean shells. I’m part of an EU project on Chitosan, where I investigate whether the minerals/mineral balance of the water is preserved or not during the treatment. Heppe provides the team with Chitosan. Prof. Prosun Bhattacharya,Land and Water Resources Engineering at KTH, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden, studies elimination of radioactive substances, arsenic etc. The experiments look very promising so far – minerals appear to be preserved throughout the treatment, while toxins are eliminated. We look forward to further experiments in 2013-2014.

viewpragIMG_0165Next stop in Europe was Prague, to attend a meeting with the co-authors to the IWA (International Water Association) prospective monograph “Drinking water minerals and mineral balance – importance and health significance, precautious principle”, where I am the editor. The aim of the monograph is, to extend the focus of standards from undesirable substances and highest acceptable levels of nutrient minerals, to basic mineral composition of water/mineral balance. We want a paradigm shift, so that drinking water is recognized as a source of minerals. Thus, we want lowest acceptable concentrations of a number of minerals in drinking water, in addition to the upper limits that already are presented in regulations. Present regulations are: WHO DRINKING WATER STANDARDS


The IWA conferences in Busan in Septemeberand Buenos Aires in December, were both very promising.

In Busan, I presented my research on the importance of minerals from drinking water on a seminar. Prof. Asher Brenner, Israel, talked about remineralization experiments after RO (Reverse Osmosis) treatment of drinking water. In addition, Jennifer De France, WHO, presented the WHO position in regards to drinking water as a source of minerals. At present, WHO as stated above, only regulates upper levels of toxic and nutrient minerals. However, Jennifer recognized this new approach as valuable.


I had an oral presentation at the IWA Regional Conference on Membrane Technology 2012 in Buenos Aires Argentina. This was the only presentation about health impacts on humans from drinking RO water. A surprising fact, since millions of people drink RO water today, where health issues have been observed! My presentation was received with respect and suspicion: up til this day, noone had considered the health aspects from drinking RO water! All other presentations were about technological improvements regarding elimination of everything from toxins to minerals from the water. 100% elimination is the goal so far, amongst most researchers worldwide. With all my research over the years and all reports I’ve read, my conclusion is the opposite: Minerals from drinking water are crucial!


I’m looking forward to see how 2013 evloves: it would be a dream come true to see the progress of mineral balanced water evolve worldwide.

IWA Regional Conference on Membrane Technology 2012

December 3rd-6th I’ll be participating in the 3rd IWA Regional Conference on Membrane Technology 2012 in Buenos Aires Argentina. My oral presentation “The importance of minerals in drinking water” will take place on Tuesday Dec 4th in Room 1 at The Argentine Centre of Engineers – CAI Cerrito 1250, Buenos Aires.

IWA – Busan, South Korea

Last week I attended the IWA World Water Congress and Exhibition in Busan, South Korea. Both the oral-  and poster presentation aimed at presenting the Prospective IWA publication, that I am the editor of. “Drinking water minerals and mineral balance – importance and health significance, precautious principle”. Today, drinking water as a source of minerals, is not considered. There are upper limits of toxic and nutrient elements, but unfortunately not any lower levels. My research states that this is necessary: one type of water may give a contribution of up to half the daily intake of specific minerals – presumed consumption 2 Litres per day – while another gives nothing at all…

The aim of the prospective publication is:

  • extending the focus from standards of undesirable substances and highest acceptable levels of nutrient minerals
  • to expand basic mineral composition of water and mineral balance.

Accompanied by two of my students from the International Baccalauoreate Program at YBC-Nacka, Sigrid Schoerner and Eric Chen, we also visited international High Schools. KAIST, one of the most prominent elite schools, had scientific equipment equivalent to Swedish Universities and all the teachers were Ph Ds!

The IWA Conference was very interesting and satisfying. Jennifer De France, WHO, 2nd speaker in the seminar, stated that “at the most Ca and Mg are considered as water contributors to the daily mineral intake, at present”, but regretted that the knowledge about other minerals is scarce. After the conference I recieved an email from here saying: “Thank you for sharing additional thoughts about the mineral balance issue in drinking-water. This is an important issue and is one that WHO plans to address further” (2012-10-08).

I’m looking forward to further advancement in the field of minerals in drinking water.
